Many sober living facilities are set up and run based upon a criminal justice model. Using a system of punishments the residents are treated as just another number in a system. With a one size fits all approach the relationship between staff and resident becomes adversarial. If the resident is unsuccessful with their recovery goals, it is blamed on the resident not wanting it bad enough. They have to try harder doing the same thing over and over. At 4D our mission is about compassion and encouragement with accountability. We have rules and standards that we enforce. We discharge residents if their behavior endangers the community or they choose to act recklessly. Any time a resident is discharged for using or rule violation we do so with compassion and work our utmost to facilitate the resident being readmitted as soon as possible. We have had much success with staying in contact with residents and bringing them back as they mature and grow out of their addiction. When unsuccessful we do not blame the resident. We review the program they are using and offer something new for them to add.
